Is a prophetic vision of a city built on swords, where knife-edge decisions shape the lives of its people.This impression portrays mega-cities as battlefields or chessboards,where every move carries weighty consequences.
The ruins of the twin towers after 9/11 2001 resembled the structure of 'Chess'
The ceramic sculpture installation 'Chess' is inspired by the city of Rio de Janeiro. This work 'Chess' also served as a inspiration for the set design that Hermans created for Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet balet,
choreographed by Martino Muller for the Gothenburg Opera in Sweden.

In this context, 'Chess' represents Verona.

Is a blend of silhouettes of human figures and doll faces, along with obelisks.
It portrays humanity treating itself to monuments of its achievements and perhaps thereby becoming overwhelming itself.
Metropolis Obelisk [2004] was created after
a visit to Rome,
where squares are littered with obelisks.
